We Died To The Old Man
It is Impossible to conform the Carnal mind. Please stop trying to do this. You have a new mind. We are to reject the carnal mind.. NOT conform it. It cannot submit. We must reject those thoughts. Acknowledge them as foreign… lies. They are NOT who you are.
They are not “your” thoughts.
We need to begin to think and speak in agreement with what His word says. You have been given a new mind. Anything that opposes the word of God is a carnal thought and is not who YOU are any longer. You have the mind of Christ.
Please, before we go further, first consider the next 2 verses very intently. Let this kingdom reality sink in. Receive it. Here goes:
“Because the carnal mind is enmity (hostile) against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.” Romans 8:7
“for, ‘Who has known the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?’ But we have the mind of Christ.” 1 Cor 2:16
Got the foundation?
Are you receiving the New Covenant reality?
Good. Now… let’s roll.
“And they that are Christ’s have crucified the *flesh* with the affections and lusts. “Gal 5:24 ** Greek- Sarka-(Strong’s 4561) Definition: flesh, body, human nature, materiality; kindred.
“I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ lives in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.” Gal 2:20
“Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death?” Romans 6:3
“We know that our old self was crucified with Him so that the body of sin might be rendered powerless, that we should no longer be slaves to sin. Because anyone who has died has been set free from sin.” Romans 6:6-7
“Likewise reckon you also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans 6:11
“Since you died with Christ to the elemental spiritual forces of this world, why, as though you still belonged to the world, do you submit to its rules:” Col 2:20
Our job is to put aside/stop drawing from the old self/ the old man
which we died to.
“Do not lie to one another, since you laid aside the old self with its evil practices, and have put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created him-” Col 3:9-10
“in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.” Eph 4:22-24
Now let’s look at the oft misapplied
and mis-taught verses from Romans 7 and break them down more carefully: (below)
“For we know that the Law is spiritual, but I am of flesh, sold into bondage to sin. For what I am doing, I do not understand; for I am not practicing what I would like to do, but I am doing the very thing I hate.
“But if I do the very thing I do not want to do, I agree with the Law, confessing that the Law is good. So now, no longer am I the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me. For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; for the willing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not. For the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want.
“But if I am doing the very thing I do not want, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me.” Romans 7:14-18
Why is it no longer “I who is doing it”? Because Paul had the revelation he was a new man. Paul identifies himself with the new nature given him through the indwelling presence and power of the Holy Spirit.
“I find then the principle that evil is present in me, the one who wants to do good. For I joyfully concur with the law of God in the inner man,
“but I see a different law in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin which is in my members.
“Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death?
Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh the law of sin.” Romans 7:21-25
NOTE: Paul clearly identified himself as the new man. The sin nature (flesh) was at war with Paul and his new man & new mind!!
“For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.” Gal 3:27
“ And you has he made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins:” Eph 2:1
And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, has he made alive together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses” Col 1:23
Critical thinking- Scripture and following question:
“Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.” Romans 6:4
Question: if we were already dead, what died when we accepted Christ?
Answer: Our old nature
Example of Old Covenant Thinking:
“Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it.” Mark 8:34-35
This is an example of Old Covenant Theology. Jesus is talking to unregenerate Jews. in order to come to the place of the cross and receive eternal life through the indwelling presence of the HS and remission of sins.. the carnal man, must deny his carnal self in order to be born again.
We have been given the Mind of Christ. All thinking that opposes his word is the carnal minded man. We DIED to this person. it is not “you.” Please stop saying “my mind” or such similar manner when referring to that which opposes God.
“Was that the Spirit of God speaking to me, or was that just me?” Is unbiblical. They are one and the same. You have the mind of Christ.
The question becomes:
“Was that the Spirit of God speaking to me… or was it the carnal minded man which I died to, trying to trip me up?”
The born-again believer has become the Righteousness of Christ and is fully Loved and fully pleasing and has been given the mind of Christ. Begin to identify with who you REALLY are as a child of God.
